Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with one of the career possibilities for female university graduates in science, which was the position of a university assistant. Dozens of female assistants worked at Czechoslovak universities, mostly in medical, natural science, and technical fields, and became qualified competition for men. The social status of both female and male assistants was precarious and was one of the causes for a relatively high turnover in assistant positions.
