Summary/Abstract: Horses played a large role in the life of the ancient Romans. They were used underground, to carry weights, pull light vehicles, in circuses and in the army. Due to their way of use, these animals were exposed to numerous diseases and injuries, among which hoof diseases were particularly dangerous. Damage and diseases of the hooves caused discomfort, pain and often made it difficult or even impossible to move, eliminating animals from further use. In his work, Vegetius described the symptoms of hoof diseases and the methods of their treatment, while also strongly emphasising the importance of hygiene and pre- vention. The diseases described by the Roman can be identified with lamini- tis, lameness, which is often not a separate disease but only a symptom of, for example, laminitis and nagging, nailing or instep – mechanical hoof injuries caused by a foreign body.
