Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to Faresmanes, a native of Lazica, captured in the sources primarily during the Byzantine war with Persia of 502-506. He prob- ably began the war in the rank of comes rei militaris and concluded it as magister militum (perhaps praesentalis) and he was present during the following peace negotiations with the Persians, led by the magister officiorum Celer. During the reign of Justin I, he was tasked to remove the anti-Chalcedonian bishop of Edessa, Paul, and suppress the community of monks there, who also were hos- tile to the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon. He ended his career as Justin I’s envoy to the Persians.Faresmanes had a reputation of an excellent soldier and a victorious leader who was feared by opponents.
