Summary/Abstract: The problem of folklore and the modern times has most often been studied with a view to one single aspect, namely, the influence of the contemporary world upon traditional folklore. This approach is very limited, and what seems to be needed is а comprehensive study as to the destiny and functions of the folklore heritage. On the basis of the works of Soviet and Bulgarian scholars from the last 15-20 years, the author makes an attempt to characterize most generally the functions of the folklore heritage in the contemporary science, culture, and everyday life, and to outline the prospects for further investigation in these directions. The relation of family rituals and folklore to the present times is here analysed in terms of the following aspects: 1) as the object of intense collecting and publishing activity; 2) as а material base for contemporary studies and theoretical research; 3) as an artistic element penetrating into all spheres of contemporary culture; 4) as one of the sources for setting up the repertoire of amateur groups and ensembles; 5) as а basis of the present day family rituals.
