Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the relationship between the problems of time and sound in the works of Władysław Stanisław Reymont. Adopting the methodological apparatus of sound studies – in particular drawing upon the notion of the “audiosphere” – it examines excerpts from the novels Chłopi [Peasants], Wampir [Vampire], Ziemia obiecana [Promised Land], and several examples from selected short stories. The analysis demonstrates the way Reymont constructs the passage of time through sound phenomena whilst depicting intratextual surroundings, be them natural or rural spaces. In the case of the industrialised areas, the descriptions of silence and monotonous sounds are used to create the impression of “frozen time.”
