Summary/Abstract: The author argues that Antek by Bolesław Prus has two genetic orders: 1) the motif of fire protection, the fate of a peasant artist with inborn talent who goes to the city for education, and Rozalka’s death are confirmed in the daily press of the time and testify to the realism of the novella; 2) quotes from the prayer book and from the poem by Teofil Lenartowicz connect Antek with the literary tradition and allow Prus to argue with the patriarchal model of the village. In his earlier Dusze w niewoli [Souls in Captivity], Prus described the development of a rural child–artist in the spirit of peasant-gentry solidarity. In Antek, the writer gave up such a view of the people and showed a model of a peasant who became an independent being.
