Understanding the Holocaust: On the Margins of Piotr Kendziorek’s Filozofia wobec Zagłady

Summary/Abstract: This is a polemical review of Piotr Kędziorek’s book Filozofia wobec Zagłady (Philosophyand the Holocaust). The article focuses on the interpretation of the Frankfurt School’souevre and the thread of biopolitics. The author calls for a rethink of the “exceptionality ofthe Holocaust” on the backdrop of a materialistic social history, as opposed to intellectualhistory. An important thread of the article is the intertwining of philosophy and theHolocaust, along with the recovery of philosophy’s ability to speak, meaning to emergefrom the impasse and paralysis associated with the Holocaust.
