On Valuing Life or Polish Eugenics Discourse toward People with Disabilities

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the Polish eugenic discourse of the interwar period from theperspective of critical disability studies. The main research materials consist of articlesby eugenicists published in the journal Zagadnienia Rasy (The Issues of Race; laterrenamed Eugenika Polska or Polish Eugenics) and eugenic legislation proposals. The articleaddresses the following issues: conceptualizing life quality and value; perceiving peoplewith disabilities as a social and economic burden, and a deviation from the ethically andaesthetically constructed norm. Discourse analysis and philological research on theways of writing about disabilities are deemed highly significant for reflection on artisticlanguages that address disability and are created by individuals who experience disability.
