Summary/Abstract: The article in broad strokes reconstructs the origins of the novel Czarna róża (BlackRose; based on notebooks and press publications), attempting an aspect-orientedinterpretation of this somewhat forgotten and underappreciated book that is neverthelessvery important in Stryjkowski’s oeuvre. The analysis focuses on the rhetorical devicesemployed by Stryjkowski: the techniques used to encrypt anti-communist content(in terms of narrative and imagery) and intimate themes, including homoerotic, family, and secret elements. The analyses reveal that the novel serves not only as a reckoningwith Stryjkowski’s ideological past but also holds a self-communicational potential. Therefore, Czarna róża becomes more than a game with state-imposed political andsocial censorship as it proves to be internalized individual censorship.
