Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the social aspect of Thomas Bernhard’s autobiographical writings. Theauthor interprets five texts from the collection Gathering Evidence. To that end, the authorcompares social science theories with the means through which Bernhard describes theindividual along with the social structure. The central focus lies on the reconstructionof various stages of socialization. In line with micro-sociological concepts, the authoridentifies the most significant moments of this process. From a social perspective,Bernhard’s prose goes beyond attempts to reckon with the Austrian nation after thetraumatic war. Bernhard delineates a boundary between what is individual and whatis collective. It becomes apparent that, in the political dimension, this is not onlya vivisection but also a depiction of the domination of the system over the individual.
