Summary/Abstract: The subject of the study is The Diary by Jan Lechoń, kept daily from August 30, 1949 to May 30, 1956. The starting point for the considerations is the proposition put forward by Kazimierz Adamczyk, who in relation to Jan Lechoń᾽s The Diary stated that the true element of the poet’s diary are these information-free sentences and cards not written from 1 to 8 June 1956. However, Adamczyk only signals the problem. My intention is to develop it in detail. I focus primarily on two aspects of The Diary: contents hidden under surrogate topics, which de facto conceal important topics, and blank cards with no record, that is the silence that is felt in The Diary during the last nine days of the author’s life. In the perspective presented here, The Diary is examined as an act of communication in which silence is regarded as more important from the point of view of research into the life and work of Lechoń than hundreds of cards densely covered with writing. Silence is considered in two aspects: as a form of self-creation and as a form of communication. I am also interested in silence closely related to the figure of the mask. A separate theme taken up here is the problem of concealment as an effect of confronting an alien. My considerations are preceded by an introduction to the subject of The Diary – an indication of its genesis and role. In my research I use the analysis and critique of sources, as well as the psychology of language and the phenomenology of language.
