The role of elites in democracy

Summary/Abstract: The article recalls the idea of democracy according to Czesław Znamierowski (1888–1967), a Polish philosopher, theoretician and philosopher of law, professor and doctor honoris causa of University of Poznań. He emphasized a particular meaning of elites for a democratic system; he presented their kinds according to different criteria of their formulation and evaluation (values, possession, function, merit, dignity, being in social caste or group of interests). Znamierowski stresses that the only value is the knight’s elite because of its disinteresedness. He also formulated conditions of democratization of social life and conditions concerning ways of formulation elites, thanks to which their parasitic character is minimalized and the social life is healed.
