Keywords: Thomas Aquinas; Thomism; word (verbum); word of the intellect (verbum intellectus); internal word (verbum interius); external word (verbum exterius);
Summary/Abstract: The philosophy of St. Tomasz belongs to the classical Aristotelian realism. So Thomas focuses on an adequate (truthful) cognition of the reality and an equally adequate (truthful) expression of it in a scientific theory. The word (verbum) for Aquinas is a "mediator" which serves this enforcement and therefore it is placed on three levels of human cognition, as the word of the intellect (verbum intellectus), the inner word (vebum interius) and the word spoken aloud (verbum vocis), i.e. external (verbum exterius). Each of these words is related to enormous problems: the first is cognitive, the second - moral and educational, and the third - linguistic and semiotic. I will attempt to outline all these issues.
