Summary/Abstract: Man is a subject not only in need of love, but also a subject who can love in a real and responsible way. On the other hand, the family—in the classical sense—is the community in which love understood in this way makes it possible for egoism to be (and even should be) replaced with the attitude of disinterested and joint action for all members of this original, local community. The aim of this article is to try to find an answer to the question of what the philosophy of the family is in the perspective of selected thoughts of two philosophers: Gabriel Marcel (1889–1973) and Roger Scruton (1944–2020). The choice of these thinkers is not accidental. Although they represented different philosophical currents (Marcel—philosophy of dialogue, personalism; Scruton—conservatism), the common denominator of thinking about the family was the concept of widely understood value and the world of values. it is in this key that the views of the above-mentioned thinkers are presented.
