Summary/Abstract: "Due to globalisation, the perception of the importance and utility of multilingualism haschanged in the last decades. Being recognised as a key competence in many societies,including European communities, multilingualism is being promoted not only as a result ofthe coexistence of many languages in the public and private spheres on a global scale, but also, as a result of the recognition of its importance in building prosperity, social cohesion and intercultural dialogue. One dimension of national language policies is education strategies for language education. This article focuses on changes and trends in selected aspects of the organisation of foreign language teaching over the last 20 years in schools in Europe."
