Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the importance of press photography in Bulgaria in different historical periods with regard to disabled children. Each photograph is open to a variety of different interpretations and can be understood only in its specific historical and social context. The entirety of the information is derived from the interaction of two heterogeneous structures – language and image. It is only through the context that the photograph obtained and obtains symbolic meaning and becomes an expression of something universal. Examples of photography-text-context analyses with regard to disabled children from the 1920‘s to the 1930‘s are presented. Lines of development, continuity, and discontinuity in the socialist period are discussed, to readdress problems such as lack of awareness and visibility of people with disabilities today.
