Elias the Carmelite (1690–1752) and His Monastic-Musical Circles

Summary/Abstract: Elias of Mount Carmel was a Carmelite friar-composer of the first half of the eighteenth century. Source research has made it possible to verify the life dates of this previously little-known artist and reconstruct the course of his monastic career. Born as Jan Mataski on 4th November 1690, he took his monastic vows on 20th July 1713, and spent the rest of his life at the Corpus Christi Monastery in Poznań. Apart from his musical activity, he also taught philosophy and theology, educated and looked after young novices, and periodically held administrative functions (as the convent’s procurator). He died on 23rd October 1752 in Poznań. Other monastic musicians were working in Poznań in his lifetime, to mention only Sebastianus of St John the Baptist and Fabianus of St Valentine. There were also other Carmelites who were either pursuing or just beginning their work as musicians: Paphnutius of St Placidus, Udalricus of St Procopius, Tiburtius of St Francis, Theophilus of St Dorothy, Quintinus of St Anthony, Casimirus of St John the Baptist, Christophorus of the Trinity, Nepomucenus of St Paul’s Conversion, and Josephus of St Anthony.
