Summary/Abstract: Hegel understands his philosophy as idealism. However, this type of idealism does not consist of the idea that the world is composed of phenomena but of the idea that the world is intelligible. Although similar, these two views are not identical. Hegel’s approach is that the intelligibility of the world makes human knowledge also intelligible and not the other way round. The article discusses why Hegel’s approach is not simply a personal option but is grounded in necessities of thought that Kantian idealism ignored.
