Summary/Abstract: From 'Scipio’s Dream' to Byron’s 'Dream', a metaphysics of dreaming fuelled humanity with the courage to explore the realm beyond reason, making dreams and visions an affective centre of a different and irrational universe. In this paper, I will discuss the signs that trust in dream gnosis has left throughout history, from antiquity to the modern times, showing how the intersection of the Renaissance with Jewish mysticism made the prophetic tradition a branch of occult philosophy and also from the man as viewed in Ancient Mysteries an incurable dreamer. When used in literature, this technique to raise man to the sky gave rise to the romantic current, the very peak of the metaphysics of dreams, where dreaming meant genius and clairvoyance, and the romantic poet could say, like all mystics, that “the outside-closed eye, inside becomes awake” (M. Eminescu).
