Summary/Abstract: Armed conflicts have existed for a long time and are also very common in the modern world. Despite their regionalextent, they have a huge impact on the political and military situation around the world. They aim to achieve the goalsof various social groups through violence, which is used not only by the armed forces of individual countries but also by non-state entities. As they move away from open, frontal battles between armies, they increasingly rely on asymmetric actions. Thediscrepancies occurring between the confronting sides concern both the quantitative parameters of their military potentialsand factors determining the level of civilization, and the differences lie both in the way of thinking and views, as well as inthemethods of conducting the battle. In an asymmetric conflict, the stronger party is the state, and the weaker party is the terroristorganisation, which, however, is able to effectively influence the process of creating the feeling of a common threat, choosing suchstrategies and tactics that limit the possibilities of the stronger party using its military potential. As part of the actions carried outby terrorist organisations, the unarmed opponent conducts a form of irregular combat, carrying out one-sided acts, while thetarget is usually completely defenceless at the time of the attack. Terrorists operate by surprise, in small groups, sometimes carryingout suicide attacks. In this context, terrorist attacks have for decades been seen as substitute military actions, reaching a previouslyunimaginable extent in the 21st century. The purpose of this paper is to present the contemporary methods of conducting militaryoperations and the place that acts of terrorism have taken in the resolution of modern conflicts
