The British Bible Society (SBB) in Romania (19th Century) and the Unfounded Suspicion of Confessional Partisanship

Summary/Abstract: The current paper introduces and explains the efforts made by British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) to produce and circulate Romanian translations of the Bible during the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The Romanian Principalities became familiar with the Society’s publications quite early. In 1817 the Romanian New Testament was published in Saint Petersburg, which was distributed, in considerable copies, beyond the Prut. Therefore, the 1817 New Testament was completed by 1819 Orthodox Bible, with the amendments undertaken by Metropolitan Bodoni and Archimandrite Varlaam. On the title page of the Bible it is mentioned that this book was published with the approval of the Holy Synod of Russia and its text is reproducing the traditional Romanian one. Although the worth’s of the BFBS are indisputable, there are still some critical voices that accuse the good intentions of the British, suspecting them of confessional partisanship. The originality of our paper lies in the attempt to critically balance both antagonistic factions.
