Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a variety of issues to which ecology as a discipline of biological sciences directly or indirectly relates. Ecology is associated with sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, pollution prevention, or modern pro-environmental technologies. The multiple perceptions of ecology are due in part to the interdisciplinary nature of the issues raised in the field of ecology, but also to the misuse of the terms ecology and ecological in the media, business, advertising or everyday language. However, it is not the purpose of the article to indicate how ecology should be viewed. Although it is worth emphasizing that the essence of ecological research is to understand the interactions that occur in the natural environment so that effective tools for its protection can be developed.
