Summary/Abstract: This study relies on relevant historical documents presenting the types of unarmed resistance of the community leaders against the official policies promoted by the Antonescu regime concerning the social exclusion and physical extermination of the Jewish population in Romania. For this purpose, the community leadership released official statements and initiated contacts with representatives of the Romanian political and cultural democratic groups. Political key figures accepted to exert pressure on the state’s leader to abandon these policies for Romania’s best interest. These efforts contributed to the partial survival of the Jewish population of the Old Kingdom and Southern Transylvania. Unfortunately, this was not applicable for the Jews from Bessarabia and Bukovina who were deported en masse to Transnistria, a territory rapidly transformed into an enormous extermination camp.
