Summary/Abstract: Review: Marek Pacukiewicz, Dyskurs antropologiczny w pisarstwie Josepha Conrada [‘The Anthropological Discourse in Joseph Conrad’s Works’], Kraków 2008. Forajter presents the key elements of Pacukiewicz’s monograph, i.e. the incompatibility of a rational, European epistemology with an alien cultural context; Conrad’s project of modern subjectivity; the problem of cultural ignorance and, finally, Conrad’s peculiar strategies when he found himself confronted with otherness, when he experienced ‘exoticism’. Moreover, Forajter discusses Pacukiewicz’s methodological contexts, pointing out, above all, how much the cultural studies expert owes to Michel Foucault and to his associations with the anthropology of literature as a new branch of humanities-related inquiry.
