The Primers during Socialism and the Socialism through the Primers

Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the primers published during socialist years in Bulgaria in their appearance as socialising instruments. The primer is the first institutionalised knowledge about the social world the child must interact with. Besides its important educational function to develop language skills, the primer plays key role in the translation of social culture. The research discusses the textbook's normative requirements, in view of the fact that the official description of social reality and the prescription of socially desired action in the world presented in the textbooks are established and actualised through adopted Educational Acts and Regulations. The outcomes of the research demonstrate the variety of logical centres identifying different periods of socialism. By sociological interpretation of changed textbook's content, the paper points out the interrelation between the ideological construction of “cocial ideal” and the value transformation in the modernisation process in socialist Bulgaria.
