Summary/Abstract: The concrete aspect of the initiation of research activity in the nuclear field, in our country, consisted in the establishment, in 1949, of the Institute of Physics of the Romanian Academy provided with funds and personnel to ensure a material basis for research. The development of activities related to the nuclear field in Romania took place starting from 1969 when the State Committee for Nuclear Energy (CSEN) was established, which had as its main mission the coordination of all activities in the nuclear field. On this occasion, the first National Nuclear Program, elaborated by CSEN, was approved, which had as main components: nuclear research and engineering, production of natural uranium fuel, production of heavy water, development of nuclear industry and construction of nuclear power plants. A mission of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency recommended and favorably approved the project to establish the Institute of Nuclear Technologies from Pitesti (currently the Nuclear Research Institute) dedicated to ensuring scientific and technological support for the development of the Nuclear Program in Romania. It was established in 1971 with scientific research, design, technological engineering and technical responsibility for the development of nuclear energy in Romania. This paper presents the significant stages of the development of the research activity and of the Nuclear Research Institute Pitesti, as well as the most important achievements obtained during the 52 years of activity of this institute.
