“Ethnicity of Childhood” in the Context of Reflection on the (Un)Memory of Childhood (the Case of Kashubian Childhood)

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the text is an attempt to recognition meaning ethnicity of childhood for the cultural construction of the identity of ethnic chil-dren, and thus – for their cultural survival in their ethnic community. The author shows the problem of childhood ethnicity based on the analysis of Kashubian children’s experiences preserved of Kashubian memory. These experiences are significant for the construction of the Kashubian cultural heritage and important for the sense of Kashubi-an identity. The theoretical basis for the reflection is: (1) The theory of childhood culture (Hannah Arendt, Romana Miller, Jerzy Nikitoro-wicz). (2) Pierre Nora’s theory of memory and places of memory. The text consists of four main parts: The first is reconstruction of the con-cept of “cultural childhood.” The second is an attempt to reconstruct the past childhood present in Kashubian memory. The essential texts of this part are selected literary works by Stanisław Janke. The author’s work was the basis for the reconstruction of the utopia of Kashubian childhood. The third is Summary and reflection closing the text.
