THE RESEARCH OF REV. KARL URBAN (1864–1923) ON THE OLD LOCALITY SEALINGS OF THE LUBLINIEC REGION

Summary/Abstract: Numerous parish archives still conceal written testimonies of the pastoral ministry of many generations of priests. These archives are also an excellent representation of their faithful service to the Church. The archival documents also include some that indicate the priests’ wide-ranging extra-pastoral interests, as in the case of Rev. Karl Urban (1864–1923) – the parish priest of Sadów in the Lubliniec deanery in Upper Silesia. This little-known researcher of Silesian history has left behind a considerable number of historical works, both published and still in manuscript. One of his undertakings was to collect and describe the oldest church and communal seals of all localities in the historic area of the Lubliniec region: towns, villages, colonies and even hamlets on the former borderland of the northern lands of Upper Silesia and the southwestern frontiers of the Commonwealth. Thanks to the notes and scrapbooks he left behind, as well as the surviving correspondence regarding the project, the article outlines the genesis of Rev. K. Urban’s undertaking and reconstructs his painstaking workshop. In addition, two unfinished manuscripts of the clergyman were characterized, which were to be used to include the results of his scientific research in one of Silesia’s historical periodicals. Years later, Rev. Urban’s work was used to publish a monograph on seals from the Lubliniec area, published in 2012.
