Summary/Abstract: Issues concerning bioethics, including euthanasia, are the subject of considerable controversy due to differences in worldview, anthropological and religious beliefs. Euthanasia is generally understood as the shortening of the torments (also referred to as killing or causing death) of a patient who suffers from an incurable and intolerable physical illness by a doctor in hospital. From a legal perspective, euthanasia is sanctioned in only a handful of countries, although it is explicitly prohibited in Ireland, Albania, and expressis verbis in Poland, among others. In the modern world, where religious principles find less and less recognition, euthanasia should pose a serious challenge to educators, sociologists, parents as well as whole families, for whom one of the most important tasks remains caring for all those who suffer, especially the elderly.
