Summary/Abstract: The Prefect Institution has undergone over time multiple metamorphoses and it has been more or less visible in the landscape of the Romanian public administration. As a representative of the Government in a county, the Prefect position is important at local level, and its role and established tasks prove the importance of this position. However, due to the lack of coordination between the various provisions – constitutional, legal, and of other nature, the prefect's role has often been diminished, particularly in terms of his or her relationships with the decentralized public services. Our study is mainly an analysis of the way in which the law system defines the relationships between a prefect and the decentralized public services.
