Summary/Abstract: The twentieth century, especially its first half, is a period of preaching crisis. Lack of success in the pulpit at that time had a wide range of causes. The article highlights the loosening of the ties between the preachers of God’s Word and the Scriptures themselves. Lack of the content of the revelation in the church preaching led to losses in the spiritual life of the faithful. The preaching theorists of this period pointed to the necessity of studying the Holy Scriptures for ascetic and homiletic purposes. They postulated regular reading and reflection on the word of God, which was to result in the success in the pulpit. In their teaching, they indicated the models of preachers who had based their teaching on the grounds of the Holy Scriptures. Unfortunately, between the theory urging the return to the most valuable source – the Bible, and the preaching practice, there was a large dissonance, which certainly did not contribute to overcoming the crisis experienced by the Polish preaching field.
