Summary/Abstract: Chewing and swallowing are complex behaviors that involve the voluntary and involuntary activities of a large number of muscles and nerves. Neurological diseases in the third age that lead to dementia often also lead to chewing and swallowing disorders (dysphagia). The prevalence of dysphagia among the elderly is high, due to a large number of factors, and in addition to the direct impact on health (malnutrition, greater possibility of pneumonia), and even life-threatening, dysphagia greatly damages the quality of life of the elderly, and has social and emotional consequences. The presence of dementia affects the treatment of dysphagia.
