Summary/Abstract: Polish Military Organization came into being in autumn 1914 on the initiative of Józef Piłsudski. Since the beginning it was his asset against the political and military entities of Austria-Hungary and Germany. Until the Kingdom of Poland was occupied by the armies of the Central Powers in summer 1915, it concerned the intelligence and sabotage units at the rear. In 1915–1918 the role of PMO evolved from a personnel base for future Polish army created close to the Central Powers towards a secret military organization of the independence camp. In October and November 1918 it played an important role in ending the Austrian and German occupation of the Kingdom of Poland and in the protection of the centers of Polish authorities that were subsequently created, especially at local level. It also provided volunteers for the Polish Army forming at that time. The intelligence networks created in Ukraine and Russia on the basis of PMO’s structures in the East played an important role during the Polish-Soviet war of 1919–1921.
