Summary/Abstract: A field study has revealed that some prisoners voluntarily serve prison sentences in place of an accomplice with whom they committed a crime. The analysis was based on interviews conducted in Polish prisons. The main purpose of this paper is to reconstruct the strategies that govern this practice and confront them with the results of experiments conducted by researchers of network exchange theory. An additional goal is to assess the usefulness of this theory for modelling real exchange networks. Arguments are presented for the thesis that prisoners’ decisions meet the criteria of rational choice, and that network exchange theory used together with game theory enables the construction of models explaining social behaviour.
