ˮ…shiny star of the muses from Aiud…ˮ Life, Death and Remembrance of Sándor Teleki III (1760–1767)

Summary/Abstract: Death has always represented an important part of a person’s life. Therefore, it was customary for relatives to utilise this tragic event to showcase the greatness of the deceased and of his/her family. The multiple types of commemorating actions have resulted in different types of historical sources that can provide us even nowadays with an introspection into the pompous ceremony of the burials. The Teleki-Bolyai Library houses numerous types of documents that are concerned with death or funeral rites: sermons, orations and poems, funeral hatchments and also obituaries. The main character of the present research is Sándor Teleki III. Despite his passing at the young age of 7, a long series of texts have been written in order to keep his memory alive, and commemorating images have been created. The study focuses on the child’s life, genealogical aspects, his image presented in the written documents, and also on the analysis of the historical sources connected to the topic.
