Summary/Abstract: The aim of the considerations undertaken in the article is to analyse one of the ways of building relationships in a family between parents and children and upbringing in the family based on negotiation. The article reconstructs the origins of the concept of negotiation in the discourse of social sciences, presenting the structure of the negotiation process, its phases and factors, as well as possible approaches dominating in management, sociology, psychology and pedagogy, referring to processes of agreeing on rules, clashing different versions of identity, symbolic interaction or negotiating identity. Analysing transformations in parental roles and relations, the author describes a family as a space for negotiations and characterizes the structure of negotiation process in the family. She also characterizes particular areas of negotiation (in) family everyday life, showing the upbringing as a process of negotiating relationships in relation to existing concepts of upbringing, e.g. authoritative upbringing in the view of D. Dewey’s concept of education and democracy, she analyses the contexts of negotiation pedagogy in the family.
