Summary/Abstract: The article concerns mid-18th century methods of firearms maintenance used in the Polish infantry as presented in archival sources. It is divided into two parts, the first of which describes the reasons and soldiers’ methods to protect their weapons. It also describes misfires and other issues occurring when shooting with 18th-century muskets and pistols. The second part contains original excerpts from unpublished sources of the time, mainly military regulations, listings and calculations, on which the first part of the article has been based. This part is going to be published in the next issue of the PHW. Some aspects discussed in the first part were not presented clearly enough in the base sources, and therefore the author reached for comparisons and sources mainly of Prussian origin.
