Summary/Abstract: During the last six years, there have been many changes in Turkish politics. After the country successfully managed to achieve the status of an EU-accession country, it displayed an enormous effort in making political reforms reality that had been demanded from the EU. At the same time, Turkey faced an economic growth not experienced before in the past, increasingly attracting foreign investments. The geo-strategic importance of the country hasn’t diminished as it was predicted after the end of the Cold War. It is the only NATO-member that has a Muslim population, is located on the joint between Europe and the Near East and is beginning to develop into the key location for securing Europe’s future energy supply. The religious-conservative AKP government has pushed the country towards the European Union, but there are still deficits to overcome. Nevertheless, the situation in domestic politics is getting rougher. The Turkish public doesn’t believe that the EU treats them in a fair manner, the positive economic effects of the accession process are perceived to be uncertain and a new wave of nationalism is sweeping the country.
