Summary/Abstract: This article aims to outline the Polish criminal law regulations regarding the concept of prostitution. Four model systems which regulate legal issues related to this issue are presented, i.e.: the prohibition system, the restrictory system, the neo-restrictory system and the abolition system. The basic criminal acts associated with prostitution – the crime of forced prostitution, both from a legal and statistical point of view – are analyzed. Statistical data related to the number of crimes committed and proceedings initiated on this subject are also provided. An analysis of the crime of exploiting prostitution, i.e. inciting another person to prostitution [Polish: stręczycielstwo], obtaining material benefits from another person’s prostitution [Polish: sutenerstwo], facilitating another person’s prostitution to obtain material benefits [Polish: kuplerstwo], as well as other acts penalized in the Polish Petty Offences Code possibly related to the practice of prostitution, are also analyzed. The article also addresses matters related to the output of the United Nations in efforts to combat the issue in the form of two conventions, i.e.: the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and the UN Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others.
