Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to assess the importance of supporting border areas with European Union funds under cross-border cooperation programs, especially from the point of view of reducing development disparities between areas covered by cross-border programs in Poland and those which are not. The main assumptions of cross-border cooperation are presented. The objectives of the operational programs on the basis of which cross-border cooperation is carried out in Poland in the 2007–2013 and 2014–2020 programming periods under the European Territorial Cooperation objective are also characterized and compared. The tool used to assess the socio-economic development is the Perkal index. It was calculated for the years 2007, 2014, and 2020 for the 10 border voivodeships. The selection of variables for the model was intentional and limited by the availability of reliable data. The main sources of data include the database maintained by the European Commission and the Central Statistical Office in Warsaw. The research shows that the border areas in Eastern Poland are relatively the least developed, while the coastal areas have the highest level of development. In the years 2007–2020, the development disproportions between border areas in Poland decreased only to a small extent. The main conclusion from the research is that the level of development of border areas is strongly related to the economic and social features of the regions (voivodeships) to which these areas belong. On the other hand, support from the European Union funds, addressed to border areas under cross-border cooperation programs, was of lesser importance in the analyzed period.
