AN INCURSION INTO THE HISTORY OF DEFINING DISABILITIES

Summary/Abstract: The present study addresses the problem of defining disabilities. In the last decades, modern states have changed the legislation regarding people with disabilities, in order to include them in society. In the history of mankind, however, there were periods when disabilities were defined and treated differently. The study tries to present a definition of disabilities in Antiquity, in the Middle Ages and in the contemporary period, after the 18th century.
