The Project Method from an Intercultural Perspective. The Dance Culture of Gdańsk in the Teaching of Polish Language and Culture to Students from China

Summary/Abstract: The subject matter of this text refers to the use of the project method in teaching Polish culture, literature and language as a foreign language to students from the Chinese cultural area. Chinese cultural and educational traditions (based on Confucianism) mean that the teacher of Polish language and culture may encounter students’ aversion (often on a motivational basis) to including cultural content in the educational process. This article presents the results of research on an appropriate method of conveying the content for a given target group. The authors, using the example of an interdisciplinary and cross-curricular educational project (The dance culture of Gdańsk), implemented at the University of Gdańsk for students of Polish from Harbin, and referring to the notion of linguaculture (introduced into the methodology of teaching Polish as a foreign language by Grażyna Zarzycka), show how, through learning the language, it also increased the foreigners’ interest in the local dance culture and aroused a willingness to participate in related activities. This process is particularly important in the context of engaging recipients from a distant cultural circle.
