Summary/Abstract: Like many French writers of his period, Vilém Mrštík (1863–1912) was attracted to painting and this is reflected in his essays and novels. And like those French writers, he too mixed ‘Realist’ and sometimes determinist portrayals of characters and their deeds with observations of the world that was changing around him. His sketches are more like paintings, emphasizing colour. His are clearly hybrid mosaics, allegedly a shortcoming that, like the French writers he admired, he was often criticized for. In any event, thanks to the variety of viewpoints introduced into the narratives, a path is opened to a fiction of uncertainty, a characteristic phenomenon of the early decades of the twentieth century.
