Summary/Abstract: The text analyzes the affirmation of genre conventions of a gay romance in the novel Guapa by Saleem Haddad. Western form, when transferred into the Arab cultural context, modifies its meanings by giving the possibility of transnational reading. The novel's fabular, stylistic and thematic-motive level keeps the structure of a classic romance novel, while the compositional level avoids the expected linear-chronological narrative by seeking the reader’s engagement in connecting narrative fragments. By describing and reflecting on strict family upbringing and authoritarian state apparatus and by representing the Arab community, the attention is directed to a non-Western reconceptualization of the genre, while at the same time allowing us to understand the transnational theme.
