“Music To Be Murdered By”: (Un)Known Melodies and Other (Pop)Cultural Elements of Bowie w Warszawie by Dorota Masłowska in the Context of Feminist Criticism

Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of the article are: (1) an attempt to capture, define and interpret the relationship between pop culture and feminist criticism in drama Bowie w Warszawie [Bowie in Warsaw] by Dorota Masłowska, (2) an analysis of the ways of implementing gender models in popular culture, here: especially on the basis of bigbit songs contained in the drama, and (3) reflection on possible resistance to the oppressive identity schemas presented in Masłowska’s analysed book. Moreover, in the context of Bowie w Warszawie, two concepts are discussed: familiar (hegemonic) and looney (subversive) tunes. The article also highlights Masłowska’s dual attitude to “pop culture” in the context of feminist criticism.
