The Private Good and the Common Good in the Former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (16th-17th Centuries)

Summary/Abstract: This paper is a proposal to reverse the common perspective and instead reflect to what extent the acceptance by a single nobleman of the limiting of his personal freedom and property in the name of the public good was conscious and voluntary, and to what extent it was forced on him by restrictions imposed by the government or the threat of social ostracism. In searching for an answer to this question, both journalistic sources and theoretical treatises typical of political discourse research were used, as well as texts written in everyday language – sejmik wills and lauds, presenting the views of individuals and local noble communities. Attempts have been made to verify the findings obtained by using the traditional method of searching for exemplification on the basis of the results of computer studies of political language.
