Summary/Abstract: The present paper aims to capture, through Strindberg's protagonist, Miss Iulia, the dynamics of human relations in nineteenth-century Sweden, through a psychoanalytic lens. The work, provocative and timeless, deals with topics hitherto considered taboo by the literary critics of the time, exploring sexual identity and female hysteria, inherited and transmitted hereditarily through the maternal path, in all its manifestation, by encompassing its multiple meanings. The play also captures the mental, cultural and psychological imbalances caused by the rigid norms of the patriarchal system that still persist in modern society, despite the effort made to dissipate gender differences.
