Summary/Abstract: In this contribution, we look at different aspects of translating realia in context. Here, we focus on what realia mean to the reader and what they mean for the translator. What factors play an important role in the choice of an adequate translation solution in the case of realia? Another essential decision we have to make is whether to use transcription or translation. The main focus is on the target audience, the type of text and the importance (text purpose) of the realia in context. We start with the findings of Vlachov and Florin and Grit. We also employ a case study in which advanced students of Dutch Studies at Palacký University Olomouc (Czech Republic) translated the book Het DNA van Nederland (The DNA of the Netherlands) by Jan Renkema. From this, we illustrate the biggest pitfalls encountered when translating realia and what challenges this posed for the students.
