Arvydas Šliogeris‘ Nihilistic Conception of Culture

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the concept of culture of Arvydas Šliogeris, one of the most prominent Lithuanian philosophers. Unlike other cultural philosophers who write books on cultural issues, this thinker has not specifically systematized the concept of culture. Arvydas Šliogeris recognizes the importance of this concept in many areas of human activity: art, religion, and technology development. As a result, attention to cultural issues is prominent in the philosopher's diaries, his philosophical essays, and his fundamental works, which earned him the recognition of a wide readership and academic prestige. The peculiarity of the concept of culture is the transformation of the ancient relationship between nature and culture. A. Šliogeris’ position is simple. If, in antiquity, there was a certain balance between these segments of the relationship, then in modern times, there is mostly antagonism. Its essence: the association of culture with excessive consumption and the imposition of human will on nature. The destructiveness of human nature and lust for artificial reality makes any culture nihilistic—Nature's response - ecological crises. Thus, A. Šliogeris’ nihilistic concept of culture explains not only the present or the past of culture but also helps to reflect on the future of man on this planet.
