Summary/Abstract: In his study, the author deals with the impact, aftermath, and context of the raging war during 1914–1918. The Great War caused heavy casualties on the battlefields as well as extensive material damage and the collapse of supply chains. The war resulted in vast geopolitical changes, onset of revolutions, counterrevolutions, and attempts to restore earlier monarchies. The social consequences of the war were further reflected in the very unstable situation of the newly emerging states. Previously, research has mostly focused on these spheres. Moreover, epidemics such as the Spanish flu spread out as well as social diseases that health care had previously failed to deal with. The medical staff of the young Czechoslovak state who developed a new healthcare system and the previously neglected medical fields significantly contributed to the struggle for the population’s health, using their pre-war and war experience and great enthusiasm. For over a decade, they received a positive reputation abroad, inter alia because of the treatment of tuberculosis – the previous scourge. The results of their work deserve proper attention.
